Drawn & Quarterly to Publish Collected Works of Yoshiharu Tsuge
posted on by Karen Ressler
Drawn & Quarterly announced at its Comic-Con International: San Diego panel on Friday that it will release the complete works of Yoshiharu Tsuge in a seven-volume set. The first volume is slated for fall 2019. Ryan Holmberg is translating the works.
Tsuge was a pioneer of gekiga ("dramatic pictures") comics, a genre named by Yoshihiro Tatsumi in 1957 to describe an alternative style of manga that stresses realism and is aimed at adults. He is perhaps best known for his 1968 manga Neji-Shiki ("Screw-Style"), a surreal story about a man wandering a desolate, post-war Japan.
The license to Tsuge's works has been notoriously unobtainable to English publishers. Drawn & Quarterly Executive Editor Tom Devlin commented, "We've been trying to get him for years. So have many other publishers. But finally, his agent told us, he's in failing health, so he finally said to us, 'go ahead.'"
Publisher peggy Devlin noted that, when the company previously published work by Tatsumi, they asked Tatsumi who His Favorite manga creator was and he would always say Tsuge.
Teruo Ishii directed a live-action film adaptation of Neji-Shiki in 1998. Panik House released the film in North America under the title Screwed.
