Website earned 30 million yen in sale of virtual items/currency, ad banners
The Tochigi prefectural police arrested 41-year-old Tokyo office worker Takahiro Satō on Thursday on suspicion of violating trademark law by using the Dragon Quest X title and related logos on a real market trading site.
According to the police, Satō ran a website that used the logo from June to December of last year. The website earned more than 30 million yen (about US$250,000) in ad revenue and the sale of virtual game currency and items.
Real market trading sites, which allow players to exchange in-game items and currency for real money, are prohibited by major social game companies, but legislation is slow to crack down on the issue.
