Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog Animator Milton Knight Alleged Victim of Hate Crime
posted on by Kim Morrissy
African-American cartoonist and animator Milton Knight wrote in a Facebook post on Monday that he was recently the victim of a racial hate crime which left him hospitalized.
In the post, Knight describes that he was provoked and attacked by a man yelling racial slurs. The conflict escalated into a physical fight; Knight suffered from "cuts, a broken nose, and more," while the assailant injured his own fist. Both men went to hospital. Afterwards, Knight wrote that he pressed charges, and the assailant was jailed for battery.
Knight describes the experience as demoralizing. "It'll be a string of repairs for me. Soon I am going to die. I can't take this any more," he wrote.
Milton Knight was born in 1962, and has been a professional cartoonist since the 1980s. His cartooning style is inspired by Golden Age (1930s) comics. He was a storyboard artist, designer, and animator on the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) cartoon. He also drew the Mighty Mouse comic book series from 1990-1991.
According to the Pasadena Weekly, he was evicted from his apartment last year after contracting typhoid from the squalid conditions there. Knight also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder brought on by years of abuse from his parents. The artist now relies on crowdfunding on Patreon and GoFundMe to fund his living expenses.
