Trans Allies Team Up to Raise US$300,000 on Donkey Kong 64 Charity Stream
posted on by Kim Morrissy
Video games YouTuber Hbomberguy (Harry Brewis) started a marathon charity stream of Donkey Kong 64 on Friday 8:30pm GMT in order to raise funds for Mermaids UK, a support network for transgender and non-binary children in the United Kingdom. The stream has since exceeded its initial goal of US$500, and has now raised more than US$346,000 as of the time of publication.
The success of the fundraising campaign is owed in part to the high-profile guests who appeared on the stream, including U.S. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, activist and whistle-blower Chelsea Manning, author Owen Jones, and Donkey Kong 64 voice actor and composer Grant Kirkhope.
Donkey Kong 64 (1999) is a 3D platformer developed by UK games developer Rare and released on the Nintendo 64. It was featured in Guinness World Record Games 2008 for having the most collectible items in a platformer, with 3,821 total items. HBomberguy said in a video from August last year that he never fully cleared Donkey Kong 64 as a child, and is attempting to get all the items to earn "101% completion." He played the game for over 50 hours on stream before completing it.
