Unlmited play of 1980s shooter ties into Sprite's retro revamp in Japan

By Egan Loo

On Tuesday, Coca-Cola Japan launched a free online version of the classic 1980s arcade game Xevious to promote the Spring makeover of its Sprite soda. The Sprite x Xevious game recreates Namco's vertical-scrolling shooter in Flash, along with some updated icons and sounds in the Sprite motif. This simplified version also comes with unlimited lives so the player can never run out of Solvalou fighters.

The game ties into Coca-Cola Japan's retro revamp of Sprite; the Japanese bottles now sport a logo inspired by the original logo that Sprite had when it first came to Japan in 1971. Xevious itself will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.
