Kaidomaru -better known his childhood name of Kintaro- is a character of one of the most popular cycle of legends in Japan, the stories associated with Minamoto no Raikou. According to the most common story, Kaidomaru was a boy raised by animals, the child of a Yamanba (a mountain hag or ogress). Raikou adopted Kaidomaru as a retainer, and gave him the name Sadata no Kintoki. Kintaro is famous for sumo wrestling bears in his childhood, and his distinctive garb of red with a large golden 金 ("gold") can be seen in many places around the time of Children's Day. In traditional woodblock prints, Kaidomaru is represented as an enormous, red-faced and coleric man -certainly not a bishounen, much less a pretty girl!
