The first 2019 issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine revealed on Wednesday that manga creator Kotoyama will publish a new one-shot manga titled "Itookashi" in the magazine's combined fourth and fifth issue on December 26. The announcement shows a character that appears similar to the character Hajime Owari from Kotoyama's Dagashi Kashi manga, and teases, "Dagashi Kashi's Kotoyama returns with a one-shot!! […] Eight months after the Dagashi Kashi finale … an anticipated one-shot is published! The main lead is … 'her'!?"
Kotoyama began the Dagashi Kashi manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in June 2014, and ended it on April 11. The manga has 3 million copies in print as of February, and it was nominated for the 41st annual Kodansha Manga Awards in 2017. Shogakukan published the manga's 11th and final volume on May 18.
The first 12-episode television anime adaptation premiered in January 2016. Funimation streamed the series with subtitles as it aired in Japan, and also streamed an English dub. The company released the anime on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in April 2017. The second 12-episode season premiered on January 7. Each 15-minute episode airs in a shared timeslot with Takunomi. Crunchyroll and Funimation streamed Dagashi Kashi 2 as it aired in Japan.
