Edwards' Godzilla film opened in the United States in May and earned over US$500 million worldwide. Legendary president and chief creative officer Jon Jashni told Variety in May, “Our initial goal was to re-brand and re-establish the property in a Tiffany way. Now, we're trying to take in all of the results of [opening] weekend.”
Writer Max Borenstein and Edwards will return for the sequel, slated to open on June 8, 2018.
