I’ve heard people worry this film would end up a romanticization of WW2 Japanese military/kamikazes. Apparently the director had some accusations of being a far right nationalist based off another movie he made. I don’t particularly believe it since the director himself said the bad guys in his Lupin III movie were Nazis because of his issues with the far right.

I’ve also never seen a Godzilla movie that was anything but anti-war.

That was my concern, actually. Japan sure loves to play the victim regarding World War II and with the movie being so focused on the "weakened country" aspect, I feared it might play right into the ultranationalist side of things.

I get that this isn´t a database for original live-action films but how is the Godzilla (1954) still not listed on ANN? Every other entry for the franchise with an entry on this site references it in some way.

(Monarch: Legacy of Monsters isn´t an ONA btw as the A stands for anime.)

The Godzilla franchise is pretty good about that, but there was definitely debate surrounding the political implications of Shin Godzilla after its release in 2016; I recall a number of people, including several prominent figures in the fandom, expressing concern that the film felt pro-military, nationalist, etc. I never really agreed with those interpretations, but the controversy was there.
(there's also the questionable choice of Legendary Pictures' Godzilla: King of the Monsters nuking Godzilla back to health with little to no ramification, but that's also an American production first and foremost)

I've also seen some of the discourse regarding Takashi Yamazaki's potential political stances - YouTuber Kyodai Kino even published a video specifically contrasting Yamazaki's Space Battleship Yamato adaptation to Anno's Shin Godzilla - but I haven't actually seen any of his films myself, apart from the Lupin one (which I quite liked). I'll be plenty happy if those worries prove unwarranted for Godzilla: Minus One after all.
